Flowers are beautiful, delicate creatures that bring joy and freshness to our living spaces. However, once they are cut, they can quickly start to wilt and lose their charm. If you want to keep your cut flowers looking fresh and beautiful for as long as possible, here are some tips to follow:

Choose Fresh Flowers

This seems obvious but it’s so important to pick flowers that are at their freshest if you want them to last longer. Sometimes this means choosing flowers that haven’t fully bloomed yet. Roses, tulips & peonies are all flowers that will continue blooming in the vase so to get the most life out of these varieties choose flowers that haven’t fully bloomed yet! Choose fresh flowers with firm, unblemished petals and strong stems. Avoid flowers that are already wilting or have started to yellow or brown.

Cut the Stems

Most florists & supermarkets will provide flowers already “conditioned” or cut for you. But if you are getting flowers from a farmstand or your backyard it’s important to cut the stems of the flowers at a sharp angle with a sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears. This will allow the flowers to absorb water more easily. Try to cut the stems under running water to avoid air bubbles that can block the water uptake.

Remove Leaves

Remove any leaves or foliage that will be submerged in the water. Leaves in the water will break down and create bacteria which will cause the water to become stagnant and foul. A good rule of thumb is to remove any leaves that are below the water line.

Use Clean Water & a Clean Vase

Starting with clean water & a clean vase makes all the difference! If you are transferring new flowers into the same vase you used for a previous bouquet – make sure the vase has been washed & sanitized thoroughly. Use clean, fresh water in the vase, and change the water every 2-3 days. This will help prevent bacteria growth and keep the water fresh.

Add Flower Food

Flower food packets are available from florists or supermarkets. They contain a mixture of nutrients, sugar, and antibacterial agents that will help keep the flowers fresh for longer. Homemade flower food is also really easy to make with ingredients you probably already have on hand! For every quart of water, use 2 aspirin, 1 teaspoon of sugar & a few drops of bleach (to reduce bacteria).

Re-Cut the Stems

Every few days, re-cut the stems at an angle and change the water. This will help the flowers absorb water more efficiently and keep the water clean.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your cut flowers looking fresh and beautiful for longer. With a little bit of care and attention, you can enjoy your beautiful bouquet for days to come.
