I have found the secret to Rice Krispie Treats. It’s true. This is the only Rice Krispie Treat recipe that you need from here on out. Toss out the old one. Don’t even think to look at the back of the Rice Krispie Box. THIS is where its at. I promise you.

There are THREE keys to perfect Rice Krispie Treats.

  1. Brown Butter
  2. Toasted Marshmallows
  3. Sweetened Condensed Milk

We all know that brown butter is all the rage these days. And for good reason. It’s LEGIT. It’s a buttery, caramel-y, nutty & warm addition to practically any savory or sweet meal.

But in these Rice Krispie Treats, the brown butter REALLY shines.

But that’s not all. Oh no. It gets better. Instead of just melting in your marshmallows – we are going to toast them in the oven first. Yep – TOASTED MARSHMALLOWS in your Rice Krispie Treats.

This takes your Rice Krispie Treats from lowly after school snack to next level dessert is no-time! The addition of some sweetened condensed milk adds additional complexity to the flavor profile & keeps the treats super soft for days!

The best part? It’s still SO EASY! The process remains pretty much the same. You will just need to heat your butter a bit longer to get it to the brown butter stage + “roast” your marshmallows in the broiler for a few minutes to get them nice & toasty. At this stage, it’s important to work quickly! You don’t want the marshmallows to cool down too much because then you won’t be able to stir everything together.

The classic Rice Krispie Treat is the perfect snack to make when you don’t necessarily feel like “baking.” Or when the kiddos need some birthday treats FAST! The other thing I love about making Rice Krispie Treats is how versatile they are. It’s so fun to add ingredients like pumpkin pie spice, chocolate chips, other cereal varieties + more. You can make so many delicious varieties of Rice Krispie Treat using this recipe as a base!

To make these Rice Krispie Treats you will need:

  • Rice Cereal
  • Salted Butter
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Vanilla Extract

The BEST Rice Krispie Treats of All Time

The most perfect Rice Krispie Treats just require two extra steps & one secret ingredient!

Ingredients

12 Tablespoons Salted Butter (6oz)

3/4 C Sweetened Condensed Milk

1 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

16oz Mini Marshmallows

9 C Crispy Rice Cereal

Instructions

1) Place your butter in a saucepan & melt over medium heat. Continue cooking until the butter begins to brown & give off a caramel-y & nutty aroma. 

2) Stir in the Sweetened Condensed Milk & Vanilla. Set aside.

3) Spread the marshmallows on a parchment lined baking sheet & set your oven to broil. 

4) Place the pan of mini marshmallows on the center rack of the oven & “roast” them under the broiler for 4-8 minutes depending on the strength of your broiler. Make sure to keep a close eye on the marshmallows so they don’t burn! And make sure to keep any over laying parchment paper away from the broiler. 

5) Once the marshmallows are lightly browned & toasted, remove them from the oven & immediately add them to the saucepan of butter & condensed milk OR move all ingredients to a separate large bowl for mixing. 

6) Stir the toasted marshmallows with the butter & condensed milk until just barely combined. Immediately begin adding the crispy rice cereal to the marshmallow mixture & stir to combine.

7) Carefully pour the rice krispie mixture into a greased 9×13 pan & spread evenly. Use a greased spatula to make the process of smoothing it easier. 

8) Wait about an hour to slice & enjoy the rice krispie treats. Enjoy!

Notes

Brown the butter in an extra large stockpot or dutch oven to cut down on the amount of dishes to clean up!
